Classy Glass

This week we explore the wonderful world of glass. It is such an interesting medium, solid yet so fragile, available in a rainbow of colours and able to morph into so many different forms. Glass is also so versatile, it can be used in so many functional and decorative ways in the home, everything from a simple light fixture through to an amazing piece of art.

Below is a collection of some creative pieces for your home, I am especially in love with the lights which play with the idea of the glass changing its form and appear to be dissolving before your eyes. An interesting concept that is smartly executed.

Hanging for Spring

In our corner of the world spring has just sprung, and the warmer weather is tempting us with hints of the summer to come. Pretty flowers are blooming everywhere and it is a great time to celebrate by bringing these colourful blooms into your homes.

It is always nice to discover an unusual way to display things and these Chive Hanging Aerium vases are just adorable. They are hanging ceramic vases that are suspended by air line cable, and come in a selection of designs and colours. They are priced so well that you could comfortably create a stunning display without hurting your hip pocket. Simply fill with your favourite flowers, succulents or airplants and enjoy!

Hayden Youlley

I adore the contraction posed by each piece of Hayden’s work.

Porcelain to me has always been such a perfect material, flawless and pristine, but Haydens work pushes the boundaries of what we expect from this material. His pieces are perfect because of their imperfections. They challenge what you see with what you know, and create a stunningly beautiful object in the process.

Please enjoy the work of artist Hayden Youlley.

Type of Work – Medium: Handmade porcelain tableware and lighting

How would you describe your style of work?

My work is clean, refined, delicate and minimal. I believe that design has the power to make everyday reality enjoyable, easier and beautiful. I aim to facilitate pure enjoyment in use. I believe that form follows function and I consider form to be a subsequent but equally important consideration.

Are you formally educated or self-taught?

I completed a Bachelor of Design from the College of Fine Arts UNSW. My education focused mainly on conceptual development. I also learned practical skills throughout my degree. Over the years, I have been able to develop them and my aesthetic to a point where I can now fully realise my ideas – from first sketches to final prototype and into small – scale handmade production.

Who or what inspires you? Where do your ideas come from?

I look for inspiration in everyday textures and forms that often go unnoticed. The Paper Series makes use of a simple creased paper form. This form is cast in porcelain, making what was once fragile and temporary, robust and permanent.

The Paper Series is about using porcelain to create a tactile experience. The simple random distribution of creases in the paper surface of the objects creates complex patters of light, shade and texture that disturb the smooth surrounds and invite study and touch.

Do you have any words of advice for aspiring artists / creators?

If you have a great idea and want to start a business don’t think about it just do it! Be creative, have fun and enjoy the hard work and its rewards.

Hayden latest work is a collaboration that sees his return to object design with the Tree Lamp.

Weighing In

It isn’t often that an object challenges you to re-think how you view it, but such is the case with the Weight Vases by Thinkk Studio.

By breaking down the two components of how a vase functions, and isolating them by using different materials, Designer Decha Archjananun, has created a unique minimal vase that is just stunning.

The concrete base acts like a water tank while the black wire is like scaffolding that supports the flowers held within. Combined, they create the illusion of a traditional vase in almost an illustrative way.

All pieces in the series are available through Specimen Editions.
